What is it? The Kids Walk is organized by students from over 20 NYC-area schools
to raise funds for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center. The 2008 Kids Walk raised over $148,000, for a total of $670,000 since 2001!
When and where? The 2009 Kids Walk is Saturday, May 9, in Central Park. See “Directions”
on the website for the meet point (near Tavern on the Green at West 67th St) and
subways. Walkers should arrive at 1:30, turn in their donations, and be in place
for the program that starts promptly at 2:00. (Please join us very quietly if you
arrive late!) The walk path is about 4.5 miles (see “Directions”; maps provided
at sign-in desk). Bring a water bottle, and an umbrella if needed. The walk ends
back at the start point for snacks and socializing – please contribute cookies,
brownies, etc. for the snack table!
Who walks? All are welcome!! Walkers include
students, parents, teachers, MSKCC families and staff, and kids in strollers. It’s
an upbeat and family-friendly event.
Is there a registration process or fee? No.
However, we request that walkers who do not get sponsors make a contribution of
$20 per family at the sign-in desk.
Bring a team! Invite everyone you know to walk
and get sponsors. Download fundraising info from the website. Contact us if we can
help in any way!
How do I get a tee-shirt? Tee-shirts are sold by the student organizers
before the walk for $10 each. Other teams should contact us if they want tee-shirts.
While supplies last, tee-shirts will be available at the walk for a $10 or more
donation. If you do not get one, please wear our tee-shirt color
ROYAL BLUE – so our
support for kids with cancer will be very visible as we walk through the park!
How do I raise funds for pediatric cancer research??
- Ask family and friends to sponsor
you by giving you a donation for pediatric cancer research. Explain why it’s important!
(See “Cancer Facts” on website.)
- Donations can be made in any amount – in cash,
by an on-line donation (click here), or by a check to Hope Street Kids (a tax-exempt
charity that handles our secure on-line donations and tax receipts).
- A letter or e-mail campaign is a great way to raise funds. Download our “Form Letter” or
write your own. Consider enclosing a self-addressed envelope with your letter.
- Each donor’s name (and address, if not on the check) should be listed (legibly!) on a
Donor Form (download from website). Put your checks, cash and Donor Form in an envelope
and turn it in at the Walk; we’ll let you know about any on-line donations made
to sponsor you. (If you can’t attend, contact us via the website to learn how to
submit donations by mail.) All donors receive an acknowledgment from Hope Street
Kids.
- Don’t forget to ask donors if their employer has a matching grant program,
and if they will obtain and sign a matching form and forward it to you. Turn in
the matching form with your funds; we’ll take it from there.
How does the Kids Walk help children with cancer? All of the walk proceeds are used to fund a grant for
research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, to find new treatments for hard-to-cure
childhood cancers. MSKCC treats more children with cancer than any other hospital,
and is one of the leading cancer research centers in the world, so our support helps
children with cancer everywhere.
Why do children with cancer need our help? Cancer
still kills more children each year than all other diseases combined, and the number
of children diagnosed with cancer is increasing by 1% each year!
PLEASE WALK WITH
US TO HELP CHILDREN WITH CANCER!!!
