How do you raise funds for pediatric cancer research?

Ask people to sponsor you in the Kids Walk for Kids With Cancer.

  • Explain that this is a 4.5-mile Walk in Central Park organized by New York City kids, which makes a significant contribution to pediatric cancer research. The first Walk in 2001 raised $35,000 and each subsequent Walk has raised more. Last year’s 2007 Walk raised $107,000, making the aggregate amount raised since 2001 more than $535,000!
  • Explain how desperately funds are needed for pediatric cancer research (see Cancer Facts sheet).
  • Ask each donor to sponsor you by writing a check in ANY amount to Hope Street Kids. (You can also accept cash.) Last year’s individual donors contributed any amount from $1.00 to $1,000 each.
  • Contributions can be made online.
  • Carefully print the donor’s name and address on the donor form so that it can be read by the charity!
  • Explain that Hope Street Kids will give 100% of the funds donated to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for pediatric cancer research.
  • None of the money contributed will be used for administrative costs by either Hope Street Kids or Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
  • Put your checks and donor forms in an envelope and give them to the organizers at your school, or bring them to the Walk and turn them in at the sign-in table.
Don't be afraid to ask potential sponsors!!!

  • Ask your parents, grandparents and other family members, and family friends!
  • Ask your neighbors in your apartment building to sponsor you.
  • Ask businesses where you or your family are well-known – e.g., restaurants, hair dresser, movie rental, deli, gym, etc.
  • When you talk to potential donors, most will be extremely impressed that kids are organizing a Walk for the benefit of children with cancer. Most donors will be appalled by the shocking inadequacy of government funding for pediatric cancer research.
  • Consider sending letters to your out-of-town family and friends explaining what you are doing, and enclosing a self-addressed envelope without a stamp. We will circulate sample letters. Experience has shown that this is the easiest fundraising approach.
  • Do you have a family member who would raise money on your behalf, or a friend at another school who would like to register for the Walk? Please enlist them!!
  • Ask donors if their employer has a matching grant program, and if so whether they will obtain a matching grant from and return it to you. (The charity then sends the form to the business, which then sends them a matching contribution.)
Don’t be shy. The children with cancer need our help! This is a worthy cause, and donors will be happy to give something. Every donation helps!
