WHAT IS IT?
Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer is a 4.5-mile walkathon to raise money for pediatric
cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The Walk originated as
an 8th grade homeroom project at Packer Collegiate in 2001. Since 2002, the Walk
has been organized each year by a group of students from schools in the NYC area.
We raised over $107,000 in 2007, for a combined
total of almost $525,000 since 2001! This is a unique project, because
it is organized and run by kids to help kids with cancer.
Please join us at the 2008 walk and help kids with cancer!!
WHO IS THE CHARITY?
Contributions are payable to Hope Street Kids. (They handle tax and administrative
matters for us, since we are minors!) Hope Street Kids was formed by U.S. Congresswoman
Deborah Pryce and Randy Walker, in honor of their daughter Caroline Pryce Walker,
who lost her battle with cancer at age 9 in 1999. All contributions are tax deductible.
Hope Street Kids will give 100% of the funds raised by Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer
to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for pediatric cancer research.
WHY ARE KIDS DOING THIS?
Cancer is the leading cause of death in children, killing more children
than ALL other childhood diseases combined. The rate of cancer in children is increasing
each year by approximately 1%. Although the number of children with cancer is going
up each year, the amount given to pediatric cancer research has actually declined
in the past few years. Only about 3 percent of National Cancer Institute funding
is allocated to fight all forms of childhood cancer. Only one drug
to treat pediatric cancer has been developed by the drug companies in the past twenty
five years. Thus,
pediatric cancer researchers desperately need our support!
Children with
cancer are suffering and dying because they have no voice. It is time for kids to
step in and help kids with cancer!!!!!
HOW DOES THE FUNDRAISING WORK?
Upper and Middle School students are organized by school and put together teams
of walkers, who agree to walk and raise money for pediatric cancer research. Walkers
ask friends and family to sponsor them by making a contribution in any amount to
Hope Street Kids. Friends, teachers and family members are also welcome to walk!
The student leaders put together a committee of students who are responsible for
organizing the recruiting, publicity and fundraising efforts. This is an opportunity
for students to be intimately involved in a significant charitable effort, which
is organized by kids for the benefit of kids with cancer.
